How Often Do You Read Other Webcomics?

A lot of people put up a links page, a page where they link to other people’s webcomics that they like.  Some of these pages list hundreds of other webcomics, and chances are they only do it so that maybe some of those sites link back. I find it difficult enough to keep up with the dozen or so I read so when I see pages with over a hundred links I find it a bit dubious.

But whether or not all of them get read, I still think it is important to read other peoples’ strips. Obviously you can continue to make webcomics without ever seeing somebody else’s work, though I think you’d be missing out. For one thing, you miss out on one of the best parts of webomics, the amazing community. By not reading any other webcomics you are cutting yourself off from this community.

However, more importantly, by not experiencing other people’s work you loose out as an artist. Speaking from experience, seeing the multitude of different styles out there not only inspiried me to work harder, but also to try things in a different way, to draw things from a different perspective. I’ve learnt a lot about how I draw from looking at other people’s drawings.

Ignore your friends

Picture the scene. You’ve got your webcomic online and you want to know what people think of it. Who should you ask? Your friends? Not if you want an opinion that counts for something.

Why your webcomic should have a twitter landing page

Everybody clicks on links and can end up at a site and they can’t tell what the site is about. This is even more true for webcomics, which tend to have the latest strip on the front page. This can be confusing for newcomers. Put it this way, imagine opening the book and the first page you find is actually page 129.

Allowing comments

I like reading comments that have been left on other people’s webcomics, but I love reading comments left on my own. It’s nice to see that you’ve hit a nerve enough for someone to comment, be that comment good or bad.

Posting schedules

Some webcomic creators are able to meet every update. Every comic, everyday. On time. For some of us however, meeting the time constraints of running a webcomic can prove difficult at times.
